$155,000 Recovery For Shoulder Injury

February 2019

This is example number one of why you should never handle your case alone / without a lawyer.  In 2017, a young lady brought her brother-in-law (Jeff) to see me.  Jeff worked as a maintenance technician at a plant in Charlotte. He sustained a bad shoulder injury in 2015, but he proceeded without a lawyer in his case.  The adjuster had offered Jeff a settlement of $36,000.  Jeff was thinking about accepting the offer, but she insisted he at least meet with me first to get my opinion.  After all, the consultation was free!

As I note in other areas on my website, insurance adjusters do not have to tell you the truth.  Adjuster do and will lie to you.  It happens all the time (daily).  There is no law preventing the insurance company from telling you a lie or failing to give you the proper benefits / money.  I see examples all the time where injured people are not getting things they are legally entitled, and they have no idea they are even being denied those things.

Jeff's case is a classic example of these problems.  I reviewed the documentation / information with Jeff.  I had Jeff tell me his story.  After reviewing the information, we talked about all the benefits the insurance company was denying Jeff.  While I couldn't give him an exact figure, I explained to Jeff why his case was worth more than the adjuster's offer.  I made sure he understood why the offer was not fair.  I answered any questions from Jeff and his sister-in-law.

Jeff decided to hire me as his lawyer.  We developed the plan I laid out at our initial meeting carefully and methodically.  The Defendants were very unhappy; they began to realize Jeff's case was getting more expensive.  The adjuster hired defense counsel.  The insurance company fought us hard.  However, we got Jeff's case in the right position for negotiations and secured over four times the initial offer in his case.  Just as important: I walked Jeff through some complex matters that greatly increased his monthly income in addition to his lump sum settlement.

This was an incredible result for one of the most pleasant clients I've ever worked with.  Jeff is just a genuinely nice person and friend.  I enjoyed speaking with him every chance we had.  It was really a pleasure to help Jeff.
