On a June 22, 2012, an eight year boy from York, South Carolina was attacked by a Chow. According to witnesses, the dog was on his leash in a neighbor's yard when the attack occurred. There has been no indication of why the dog attacked the boy and no criminal charges have been filed. The boy was transported to Piedmont Medical Center with several wounds and scratches on his arms and legs. He has been recovering well since the incident but will likely require additional medical care.
Although the attack on the York, South Carolina child is still tragic, this recent attack was not as vicious as recent attacks in the Charlotte, North Carolina area. On May 30, 2011, a Rock Hill eleven year old was attacked by a Pit Bull. The boy was attacked while walking to his neighbor's house after the Pit Bull's leash snapped. Authorities were unsure whether the dog was properly vaccinated and whether the leash was capable of actually restraining the dog. The boy was severely injured with injuries to his hands and arms, including the loss of four inches of the boy's scalp. The injured child will require months of corrective surgery and skin grafting.
