As previously discussed, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police will increase their presence at certain events designated as "extraordinary events." During such events, the public will be subjected to more restrictions within event boundaries. Such restrictions include warrantless searches of their person by the Police. Two previous events were designated as "extraordinary events": the annual shareholder meeting at Duke Energy and the annual shareholder meeting at Bank of America. Officers said they had a better opportunity to interact with the protesters during these events and that no significant incidents occurred during the event.
Charlotte's Speed Street festival, which begins on Thursday in Uptown, has been designated as one of these "extraordinary events." Thus, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police will likely increase their presence during the race-themed festival, which is in preparation of the Coca-Cola 600. This means officers will have great latitude in deciding whether to search an individual during the festival. A description of the event's boundaries can be found here.
